Family scripture memory system updated

Monday, October 29th, 2007

This year we have implemented a systematic approach to memorizing scripture. We have an index card box (that we call the “Treasure Box”) that holds forty or so index card dividers. The dividers are labeled as follows:

Daily
Odd day
Even day
One for each day of the week
One for each day of the month (31 in […]

Mac OS X Leopard: Parental Controls

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

The new parental controls feature in Mac OS X Leopard are definitely worth the upgrade price. The parental controls will:

Establish accounts with independent settings (so you can be more restrictive with kiddo accounts).
Give you a dynamic content filter that blocks objectionable material (like Covenant Eyes or Safe Eyes services)
Allow you to log and monitor […]

Homeschool 3.0: Dad on Deck

Monday, March 26th, 2007

One thing is for sure…if I am going to be participating more in our homeschool, I am going to need to be home more during school. (Profound, I know…) My work schedule has been such that I am getting home for dinner, and post-dinner time doesn’t work well for school activities around our home. […]

Homeschool 3.0: Pop Quiz!

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

One of the “big things” that we are pursuing in our homeschool is more Dad involvement. I want to be as involved as possible, while still being involved in our church, pursuing my wife, pushing ahead with my vocational endeavors… We were delighted to discover a new aspect of the Tapestry of Grace […]

Homeschool 3.0: Tapestry of Grace

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Next year we will be using Tapestry of Grace as the backbone of our homeschool curriculum. As we have dug into the newly updated and redesigned curriculum, Mindy and I have just fallen in love with it.
The big things that come to mind in making our decision:

Our major hurt in the old […]

Continuing a review of our Homeschool 1.0 charter…

Our goals for our children’s future education:

We desire for our children to know, understand, and apply the truth of the Gospel in their lives as they see the Gospel modeled in our family life and church life as well as our curriculum.
We desire for our children […]

Way back in Homeschool 1.0, we sat down and put together a statement on our reasons for homeschooling and our goals for our children’s future education. Just for grins, I’m going to post those here. As we are evaluating a seismic change in our homeschool, it’s a great time to revisit and evaluate […]

Kids writing code

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

I was eight years old when I started programming. My folks bought an Atari 600XL console computer and never really seemed to use it. I got ahold of the thing and realized that there was this language called BASIC that was preinstalled. I poured over the manuals and found a magazine at […]

Homeschool 3.0

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

We began homeschooling our oldest son, Nate, in 2003. We picked a patchwork of elements to put together the “perfect” curriculum and anticipated a “perfect” year full of classical readers, Latin, art appreciation, etc, etc. Bah! After a few months, we were scratching our heads and wondering why Nate, Mindy, and I […]

Honest Left-Wing Professors are Scary

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

Bill Savage, an English professior at Northwestern University, has written a fascinating bit explaining why he doesn’t feel threatened by “red states” (i.e. conservatives, Christians, Republicans, talk radio listeners, people who like having children, etc, etc) having babies at a markedly faster rate than blue states.
His intentions with children of conservatives:
But even if this prediction […]

Love Books…Use Computers

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

Here’s an interesting little article about putting books and computers in their proper places. I would much rather have my children fall in love with reading Lord of the Rings as a family on our big “comfy couch” than to have them obsess with the Lord of the Rings video game…
Computers generate a lot […]
